About the Atocha:

On Spetember 6th 1622, only 2 days after leaving Havana harbor 8 of the 28 vessels in the Tierra Firma fleet would succumb to their ill gotten fate wrecking in a hurricane along the Florida Straights from the Marquesas to the Tortugas, just 30 miles from Key west. The Atocha was a Spanish treasure galleon and the most widely known vessel of the Tierra Firme flota, departing Havana Harbor setting sail for Spain on September 4th 1622. Formally known as The “Nuestra Señora de Atocha” (translated to Our Lady of Atocha ) was affectionately named for a holy shrine in Madrid, Spain. Built in Havana harbor for the Spanish crown under King Phillip III in 1620. Thje Atocha was rated at 550 tons, with an overall length of 112 feet, a beam of 34 feet, and a draft of 14 feet. The Atocha was a heavily armed Spanish galleon that served as the “almirante” or rear security for the Spanish fleet trailing behind the flota to prevent and deter attack from the rear. For the voyage the Atocha alone carried 24 tons of silver bullion in 1038 ingots, 180,00 pesos of silver coins, 582 copper ingots, 125 gold bars and discs, 20 bronze cannon and 1,200 pounds of silverware cargo which estimates range between $250 and $500 million, including silver from Bolivia, Peru and Mexico, gold and emeralds from Colombia, and pearls from Venezuela.
